Touching on the wide array of people and events who have brought life to the history of the Placentia area, The Placentia Area – A Changing Mosaic offers a glimpse of the deep history that has... More > transformed this part of Newfoundland and Labrador. The history is a collection of interconnected stories. Geological processes forged a landscape that would feature in later actions and activities. Geology created a wide expansive beach that Basque fish harvesters discovered was perfect for drying fish. This attribute, along with its deep harbour, then ensured that Placentia would go on to function in the struggles between the French and English. And from this period, the Placentia area has evolved, playing a role in the lives of well-known characters such as Pierre le Moyne d’Iberville or Roger F. Sweetman, as well as the less known, yet equally important, women and men who simply came to make a life for themselves. To the present day, the latter has remained a defining quality of the region.< Less

On the Making of an Island By Nick Sowers
Paperback: $11.12

In 2009 I traveled the islands of the world. The itinerary included actual islands such as Guam, Okinawa, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Azores, and Crete. I also traveled to places not normally described as... More > islands: military bases, bunkers and walled cities clearly lodged within a continent. The common denominator of these “islands”, both actual and metaphorical, follows a simple rule: an island is exclusionary. An island’s very nature is to agree internally as to its own identity so as to better exclude and differentiate itself from all other forces which may challenge that identity. The process of an island growing more distinct as an island or, alternatively, dissolving into its surrounding ocean, is fascinating to behold. It is a geologic process compressed into an observable timescale. The process of islands in the making and falling apart drove my travels during the year and continues to shape my perception of landscapes.< Less

War & Peat - The remarkable impacts of conflicts on peatlands and of peatlands on conflicts - a military heritage of moors, heaths, bogs and fens. As we approach the centenary of the Great War... More > (WW1), matters of landscape, terrain, resources and strategies become increasingly topical and relevant. The relationships of people and landscapes, of economies and conflicts, and ecology and history, are complex and multi-faceted. For peatlands, including bogs, fens, moors, and heaths, the interactions of people and nature in relation to history and conflicts, are both significant and surprising. The themes of this book were addressed at a major international conference in 2013, and the expanded papers are presented here as chapters. The conference and book are mostly focused on temperate environments, but the interactions of peatlands and conflicts are more global and wetlands have been hugely influential in tropical conflicts too.< Less

Shadow and Ghost Woodlands Survey Guide By Ian D. Rotherham & Christine Handley

This short survey guide is an introduction to investigating landscapes, looking for shadow and ghost woodlands. These are often 'lost woods', which do not appear on maps as woodlands, or even have... More > names can be indicators of former land-use over hundreds of years. The guide results from many years investigating wooded landscapes and has developed specifically from a project begun in 2009 by Professor Ian Rotherham and colleagues. In 2012, the project received funding from the Peak District National Park's Sustainable Development Fund to involve volunteers in investigating the local landscape in the eastern Peak District. A version of the survey guide was produced for local volunteers. This publication brings the work together and illustrates wider issues and applications using some of the information from the project to date. There is still much more to do and other areas to investigate. The authors hope that this publication will act as both a guide and catalyst for further work.< Less
