Captains Courageous By Rudyard Kipling
eBook (ePub): $3.99
Captains Courageous is Rudyard Kipling's story of little Harvey Cheyne, the spoiled child of a millionaire who gets washed overboard at sea, and is picked up by a fisherman. Harvey asks to be... More > returned to shore, but the captain refuses, as his crew needs to work to make a living. So he's put to work catching and cleaning fish alongside another boy, Dan, who becomes a friend. Over time, little bratty disrespectful Harvey undergoes some kind of change, learning lessons in honor, trust, and hard work. Kipling did win the Nobel Prize, and was the first Englishmen to do so at that, but Captains Courageous isn't exactly a literary masterpiece. It's a charming, lighter story, suitable for the "Hardy Boys" set. It is a tale well told, and the language is vivid and the characters fun and memorable. Also this book might give some readers a challenge, as it's written in colloquial English (from turn-of-the-century New England), but the dialogue is a good example of some old timey talk.< Less

Musical Transformations By Val Scullion & Marion Treby
eBook (PDF): $3.63
This monograph focuses on two early nineteenth century works by German Romantic writer and composer E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822): his fairy-tale opera Undine (1816) and his literary fairy tale 'The... More > Golden Pot' (1814). Situating the former at the beginnings of German opera and the latter in the developing tradition of German fairy tales, the authors trace similarities of structure, form and concepts in the two works, and explore musical and literary influences within the context of contemporary gender politics. They show how Hoffmann transforms existing musical forms, such as sonata rondo and arabesque, into musico-literary devices present in the fairy tale. Their examination reveals that both opera and tale are suffused with feminine methods of composition and writing style, and, concomitantly, express a thematic emphasis on strong women. In dialogue with relevant criticism, the monograph concludes that both works critique, rather than support, conventional patriarchal values of this historical period.< Less
The Republic By Plato
eBook (ePub): $2.99
The Republic The wonderful series of dialogues in which Socrates takes the leading part are at once the foundation and the crown of all idealistic philosophy, and as literary masterpieces remain... More > unmatched. Certain of Plato's disciples would claim that his highest achievement is "The Timæus"; there are some who set their affections on "The Phædo"; but a general vote of all Platonists would probably give the first position to "The Republic," and this is undoubtedly the work which has had the widest general influence. In "The Republic" itself Socrates is, professedly engaged in a disputation, of which the object is to discover what Justice means; and this leads to the description of the building up of that ideal state or commonwealth from which the dialogue derives its title of "The Republic."< Less
