To Make A Long Story Short By I M
eBook (ePub): $4.40
Teaching Resource/material. Classroom. Notes. Subject : English Language Learning Methode : Noticing Nota Bene K12 "special feature, special phrasing, a peculiarity". a phrase or a fixed... More > expression that has a figurative, or sometimes literal, meaning. Categorized as formulaic language. Expressions such as these have figurative meaning. When one says "The devil is in the details", one is not expressing a belief in demons, but rather one means that things may look good on the surface, but upon scrutiny, undesirable aspects are revealed. Similarly, when one says "The early bird gets the worm", one is not suggesting that there is only one opportunity; rather one means there are plenty of opportunities, but for the sake of the idiom one plays along, and imagines that there is only one. Alternatively, the figurative translation of this phrase is that the most attentive and astute individual, or perhaps the hardest working or most opportunistic receives the most desirable opportunity.< Less

This collection of short stories was physically dragged with me over a life time before finally being typed anew -- this time onto electronic medium from the original electric or mechanically typed,... More > hand corrected vellum sheets -- and coming to rest on the cloud. This typed and now published collection constitutes a gift to all and no-one from my work-a-day world retirement to one of the arts, philosophy and life. Written mostly as a young man in Belgium the stories represent some of the more imaginary turns of a youthful mind. Surrealism, existentialism, modernism: the likes of Robbe Grillet, Boris Vian, Jean Cocteau and Kurt Vonnegut show threads of influence throughout the warp and woof. Several recent stories complete the collection. There you will recognize the spirit of George Orwell or that of the peerless Ferdinand Celine, if you look carefully. The stories are torn from life, a life you will know well too, if not the one you were taught to see.< Less
