The main group (s- and p-block) elements are among the most diverse in the Periodic Table. Ranging from non-metallic gases (e.g., hydrogen and fluorine), through semi-metals (e.g., metalloids such as... More > silicon) to highly reactive metals (e.g., sodium and potassium). The study of the main group elements is important for a number of reasons. On an academic level they exemplify the trends and predictions in structure and reactivity that are the key to the Periodic Table. The main group elements represent the most prevalent elements in the Earth’s crust, as well as most of the key elements of life, and have enormous industrial, economic, and environmental importance. In this regard an understanding of the chemistry of the main group elements is vital for students within science, engineering, and medicine; however, it is hoped that those who make political and economic decisions would make better ones if they had a fraction of the knowledge of the world around them.< Less

In the opening years of the nineteenth century the islands in Bass Strait were the happy hunting grounds of sealers, and such was the fame of the region that sealers from as far afield as Mauritius... More > and New England came to share in the rich harvest. It was the practice of merchants of Hobart and Sydney to send gangs of sealers to live on the islands, providing them with some provisions, but expecting them in the main to subsist on the flesh of kangaroo, wombat, and emu. The producer of this book initially set out to publish a record of the out-of-print essay of highly regarded anthropologist A.L.Meston, a Launceston teacher, historian and humanitarian. Because of the need to qualify for a quarto Lulu self-publishing format, it was necessary to include material from other out of print publications...a fortuitous requirement, given the result, an insight into an otherwise forgotten part of Tasmania's and indeed global history of the callous and shameful treatment of indigenous inhabitants.< Less

Benefits of Recycling Most of the reasons we recycle are environmental, although some are economic. These include: Too Much Garbage One of the main reasons for recycling is to reduce the amount of... More > garbage sent to landfills. Landfill usage peaked in the 1980s, when Americans sent almost 150 million tons (136.08 million metric tons) of garbage to landfills each year. Today, we still dump more than 100 million tons (90.719 million metric tons) of trash into landfills annually [source: Hall]. Even though modern sanitary landfills are safer and less of a nuisance than the open dumps of the past, no one likes having a landfill around. In heavily populated areas, landfill space is scarce. Where space is plentiful, filling it with garbage isn't a very good solution to the problem. Today, recycling efforts in the United States divert 32 percent of waste away from landfills. That prevents more than 60 million tons (54.432 million metric tons) of garbage from ending up in landfills every year [source: EPA].< Less
