In Anbetracht der zahlreichen Besonderheiten der Dienstleistungen gegenüber Sachleistungen wäre es jedoch zu einfach, lediglich das Instrumentarium des Sachleistungsmarketing auf das Dienstleistungsmarketing zu übertragen. Eine dienstleistungsspezifische Erweiterung nach Meffert gibt zunächst Aufschluss über den Wandel der klassischen 4 Ps hin zu den 7 Ps des Dienstleistungsmarketing.
