While fighting at the battle of Olustee alongside what remained of the 54th Mass. he had his prosthetic leg shot off but returned to the line. In June of 1865 he was promoted Captain to serve with General Saxton at the Freemen Bureau. Four months later he was demoted for questionable charges of missing a leg. The army reversed that demotion in 2014. John Darling was demoted because he served with a group of officers that refused to take back the foty acre land grants General Sherman issued during the war. To this day some of those lands are still owned by the families of former slaves because the actions of these honorable men.< Less
