One Thousand Nights and a Night By Richard E. Burton
eBook (ePub): $3.99
The subtitle for Sir Richard Francis Burton's Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night, is "A plain and literal translation of the Arabian Nights' Entertainments," however, given the... More > tendencies of its translator, it is anything but plain. Burton wasn't some crotchety old scholar lucubrating his way through the Arabic in far away England; he had lived all over the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, and spoke 29 languages to boot. The Book of the Thousand Nights contains the larger story of Scheherazade, who supposedly told each tale to her murderous husband over the course of the night so she might keep her head. Burton's translation of the Arabian Nights is in 16 volumes, and at the end of each are his footnotes. Be sure not to skip these, as they're a wealth of anthropological and cultural info written by a most frank and sometimes libidinous author. The collection itself can be traced by back thousands of years and comes from sources such as Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian.< Less

Everything does not always go to plan: the trick is to appear confident throughout and not let it get you down – even if you can’t get to sleep afterwards. Life as a teacher has plenty... More > of challenges, especially when you organise trips abroad for your pupils. Paul Henderson shares some entertaining tales from the many adventures he and his pupils have had on archaeological sites as well as music and sports tours. When he rises to the dizzy heights of Deputy Head and then Headmaster, the tales continue causing even more sleepless nights. Some further tales, allegedly discovered from a lost version of the Arabian Nights do not help him sleep – they remind him too much of events in his own “sultanate”! This book spans forty years in schools, recalling with affection and humour the ups and downs of his time in Norwich, St Albans and Eltham College, London.< Less
The Arabian Nights Or, The Thousand And One Nights By Various
eBook (ePub): $2.99
The Arabian Nights Or, The Thousand and One Nights There is as much doubt about the history of "The Thousand and One Nights" as that which veils the origin of the Homeric poems. It is said... More > that a certain Caliph Shahryar, having been deceived by his wife, slew her, and afterwards married a wife only for one day, slaying her on the morning after. When this slaughter of women had continued some time he became wedded to one Shahrazad, daughter of his Vizir, who, by telling the Commander of the Faithful exciting stories and leaving them unfinished every dawn, so provoked the Caliph's curiosity that he kept her alive, and at last grew so fond of her that he had no thought of putting her to death. As for the authorship of the stories, they are certainly not the work of one mind, and have probably grown with the ages into their present form. The editions published for Christian countries do not represent the true character of these legends, which are often exceedingly sensual.< Less
