Seven Spectacular Compounds and the folding project that spawned them By Jonathan Filley
Paperback: $12.00
Prints in 3-5 business days
This is an account of a project undertaken to see if simple organic compounds can be synthesized and assembled into large folding molecules, akin to proteins. The hope was to make enzyme-like... More > molecules easily and cheaply for industrial catalytic reactions. While only limited success can be claimed in making folding molecules this way, many of the smaller monomer precursors which were made during the project turned out to be easy to make, inexpensive, and formed beautiful crystals—hence their description as spectacular. These compounds could be incorporated into undergraduate organic chemistry lab curricula, or they could serve as starting materials for projects requiring multifunctional compounds. This book provides synthetic and spectroscopic details for approximately thirty compounds, and also x-ray crystal data for a few compounds which showed exceptional behavior. Out of these thirty compounds, the number of truly spectacular ones came to seven, forming the title of the book.< Less
