April 1940 den Kampfauftrag, die Vereinigung der norwegischen Truppen, die nördlich von Oslo standen, mit den britischer 148. Infanterie-Brigade um jeden Preis zu verhindern. In der Nacht und bei starken gegnerischen Abwehrfeuer, sprangen Schmidt und seine Kompanie etwa 8 km südlich von Gudbrandsdal ab. Bald darauf entbrannten die ersten Gefechte zwischen norwegischen Einheiten und seiner Kompanie, in deren Verlauf Schmidt schwer verwundet wurde. Er blieb dennoch bei seiner Truppe und führte seine Kompanie weiter. Für seine Kühnheit und Geschick im Einsatz, erhielt er am 29. Mai 1940 das Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes.< Less
