En 1549, il visita Rome au cours d’une mission diplomatique de deux ans et il y retourna en 1566, lorsqu’il y fut nommé secrétaire d’ambassade, y restant trois ans jusqu’en 1569. Pendant ces deux séjours, il lut des livres traitant de cryptographie et entra en contact avec des cryptologues.
