Paul VI’s death calls the College of Cardinals to Rome, in the late summer of 1978. Among them is Albino Cardinal Luciani, Patriarch of Venice; a humble man with no aspirations to the Papacy.... More > As the Conclave progresses, Luciani is shocked to realize that the Cardinals have set their sights on him. Putting his faith in the Lord’s decision and in the promise of help offered by the Curial Cardinals, he accepts the nomination and takes the name John Paul I. As Pope he brings a simplicity and humanity to the post which is too much for the members of the Curia, who criticize his every word, but never come forward with the help they had promised. Over-worked and frustrated, he confides in his friend, Sister Vincenza. She in turn tries to comfort him and give him faith in his ability to deal with it all. Buoyed by her confidence, he makes a valiant attempt to move forward—all for naught, as the Vatican staff block every move. Tiring of the constant battle of wills, Luciani conceives a plan to free himself.< Less
