The images are cleaned up as much as possible, but this comic was originally published before 1920; the paper of the original has aged & deteriorated. The image quality reflects the book's venerable age. In offering this new edition of Hawkshaw, I have tried to capture the flavor of the original — which is quite different from that of later comic books.(Note the headers on every page.) Gus Mager created Hawkshaw the Detective in 1913. Two of his earlier comic characters, Sherlocko & Watso, were inspired by Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson. Arthur Conan Doyle threatened legal action, so Mager took a name from an 1866 play The Ticket-of-Leave Man which starred a detective named "Hawkshaw."
