This book presents information on the design of retaining walls and inland and coastal flood walls. Retaining walls are defined as any wall that restrains material to maintain a difference in... More > elevation. A floodwall is defined as any wall having as its principal function the prevention of loading of adjacent land. Not specifically covered in this book are seawalls which are defined as structures separating land and water areas, primarily designed to prevent erosion and other damage due to wave action. They are frequently built at the edge of the water, but can be built inland to withstand periods of high water. This book also describes procedures for the design of retaining and flood walls on shallow foundations, i.e., those bearing directly on rock or soil.< Less

More > 75-year-old structures is no longer viable for OHA, which intends to demolish the site and rebuild. OHA has applied for a HUD Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant and envisions rebuilding the community to better serve its 1,300 residents, roughly half of whom are Sudanese or Somali refugees. This book presents four planning and design proposals generated through intensive research and mapping, which provide redevelopment approaches ranging from immediate low-impact design to visionary planning strategies. Kansas State University landscape architecture students completed the work during the summer of 2016 in an 8-week community planning and design studio led by professors Belanger and Hahn. The effort was supported with funding from Kansas State University’s Technical Assistance to Brownfields.< Less
