Melancholy Scientist is a collection of poems about writing poetry, and about making music and art and dance and trouble. Edwin Dobb referred to the scientific method as a “modest... More > device.” Poetry is another modest device for interpreting the world as we find it. Amsterdam, Havana, Ireland and Saskatchewan are among the local and distant places these poems wander. The work approaches the poem from different directions, including synesthetic translations, elegies, self-portraits, blues, longer poems and even a half-sonnet. The poems stand, like Issa’s scarecrow, leaning into the wind, heart open, where “the music of the breath is enough to dance to.” NICHOLAS POWER is a founding member of the Meet the Presses collective, and has performed with the sound poetry ensemble Alexander’s Dark Band. He works as a psychotherapist in private practice. He has been published by Underwhich Editions (wells), The Writing Space (a modest device) and Battered Press (No Poems).< Less
