John was a rescue diver during the war, receiving a 5-gallon can of ice cream for each pilot safely returned to the carrier! John Chapman is also a Korean and Vietnam Veteran. William Wedgwood Benn was a serving Liberal politician in Britain when the First World War broke out. After enlisting in the army in 1915, he saw active service at Gallipoli, and was eventually... After his recuperation in Egypt he arranged to be seconded to the Royal Naval Air Service as a flying observer aboard the seaplane carrier HMS Ben-My-Chree. He returned to the UK in early 1918 and learned to fly at Calshot. On conclusion of his training, he was posted to Italy, where he served initially as an observer in 34 Squadron, RFC. He remained in Italy until just before the Armistice. For his outstanding wartime service, he was awarded both the D.S.O. and D.F.C.. These, his wartime memoirs, were first published in 1919. William Wedgwood Benn, 1st Viscount Stansgate, also served his country in the Second World War and continued to play an active role in both the Liberal and Labour movements in Britain up to his death, on 17 November 1960.< Less
