During this three-day colloquium, presented by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), a group of professionals with expertise in earthen conservation, materials science, construction, building... More > standards, and earthquake engineering gathered to discuss the current state of knowledge and the challenges of preserving our earthen cultural heritage in active seismic zones. This publication contains a selection of papers presented at the colloquium, as well as several later submissions by participants. This project developed a seismic model for Oregon truck routes using Risk for Earthquake Damage to Roadway Systems (REDARS2) and HAZUS-MH. We refined data from the first model to more realistically... More > represent bridge inventory, address the seismicity of the Pacific Northwest (PNW), conduct sensitivity analyses of soil data and develop a seismic network model of Oregon bridges to assess roadway vulnerability. Assumptions were reviewed and Oregon data was incorporated to replace defaults for economic loss. The largest probable PNW earthquake is a subduction zone earthquake. A shortcoming of REDARS2 is its inability to incorporate subduction zone attenuation. USGS shakemaps for Cascadia subduction zone events are incorporated to add that capability. Analyses of the network incorporating bridges and post processing of the data with input from Oregon DOT engineers resulted in recommendations for bridge route priorities. More data and cost-benefit analyses are needed for final retrofit decisions.< Less
PERFORMANCE OF RC BUILDING UNDER DYNAMIC FORCES AND SUITABILITY OF STRENGTHENING BY FRP JACKETING By Ganesh Lakade et al.
eBook (PDF): $8.99
In the recent past, India has seen mass destruction due to failure of structures hit by earthquakes and consequently, lost a lot of lives. Hence, it is of utmost importance that attention be given to... More > the evaluation of the adequacy of strength in RC framed structures to resist strong ground motions. In this project, a 15 year old four storey reinforced concrete structure has been considered, which lies in Seismic Zone III according to IS 1893:2002 classification of seismic zones in India. For non-structural members masonry infill has been assumed. In the Equivalent Static Method of analysis, the seismic load acting on the structure is assumed to be an equivalent static horizontal force applied to individual frames. The total force applied shall be equal to the product of the acceleration response spectrum and the seismic weight. It is used only for low to high rise buildings without significant coupled lateral-torsional modes.< Less

Liquefaction and liquefaction induced damage in pile supported structures is seen in earthquakes around the world. The Pacific Northwest has seismic hazard conditions as a Cascadia Subduction Zone... More > (CSZ) with an expected earthquake magnitude of 9.0 (Mw) and a 300 year return period. Oregon Dept. of Transportation found thousands of Oregon bridges to be vulnerable to a CSZ earthquake, with repair and replacement costs estimated at over $1 billion. This research sought to evaluate the seismic performance of bridge foundations and liquefaction mitigation alternatives. The main objectives were to develop design charts for mitigation alternatives and to develop methodologies for assessing the performance of bridge pile foundations in laterally spreading ground. Research focuses are: 1) ground improvement methods, particularly using stone columns and deep soil mixing grids, and 2) assess the seismic performance of bridge foundations and seismic retrofitting alternatives for the bridge foundation.< Less

Great American Eclipse: Earthquake and Tsunami By John Hogue

BRACE YOURSELF FOR UPHEAVAL AND TRANSFORMATION IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS. Total solar eclipses seem to trigger seismic events upon the lands and seas their shadows touch. On 21 August 2017, the lower 48... More > states had a solar eclipse draw its mysterious darkness of 90 to 100 percent totality over four of some of America’s most dangerous seismic and tsunami-generating quake zones. If the pattern of seismic activity seen in the Great Eclipses of the past are repeated in the Great American Eclipse of 2017, then a series of potential major quakes of magnitude 6 to a megathrust of magnitude 9 could follow in the next 5 years. World-renowned prophecy scholar and Nostradamus expert John Hogue is author of over 1,000 articles and 46 books (1,180,000 copies sold) in 20 languages. Hogue strives to take readers “back to the present” empowering them to create a better destiny through meditation.< Less
Retrofitting of RCC Water Tank By V.D. Salunkhe et al.
eBook (PDF): $8.99
The Indian standard “Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures: IS 1893:2002” has been revised. The seismic zone factors have been changed. Response spectra are now specified... More > for 03 types of founding soil strata & a response reduction factor has been introduced. Elevated water tanks are vulnerable to earthquakes, owing to large mass concentrated at the top of relatively slender supporting systems. Existing elevated water tanks in India designed using IS 1893:1984 needs to be checked for safety as per revised code (IS 1893-2002) by carrying out static analysis. It is observed that the structure is unsafe due to under estimation of seismic load as per old code provisions. Retrofit measures such as additional structural elements and passive devices like viscous and friction dampers are modeled and structure analyzed again to check for compliance with the revised code.< Less
The Temblor of Diablo By James W. Cotton
eBook (PDF): $5.95
Arie Petrovich is a scientist and a writer for a popular nature journal. He is given an assignment to write an article about the new seismic monitoring system being installed in the San Francisco Bay... More > Area, but his project takes on a different angle when a major earthquake strikes the city of Walnut Creek, killing hundreds and leaving the two seismologists he was interviewing among the body count. Being a geologist, he notices that the damage and injuries were not exactly consistent with that caused by earthquakes. Local law enforcement is already overwhelmed with the task of maintaining order in the disaster stricken zone and doesn't feel the need to investigate further, but Arie calls upon his resources, connections, and vast knowledge of natural science to aid in an investigation and a manhunt that leads him all across the state of California.< Less
