Par exemple, itlóg “œuf” s’écrivait ilu, comme ilóng “nez” et ílog “rivière”. Si l’auteur d’un texte pouvait facilement le relire, en revanche un tiers devait faire un sérieux effort pour le déchiffrer et souvent n’y parvenait pas. Dans le cas de la correspondance, l’emploi de formules facilitait la lecture. En raison de cette carence, le baybáyin fut rapidement supplanté par l’alphabet latin au cours du Dix-Septième Siècle. Il est en train de faire une réapparition timide dans la diaspora philippine émigrée aux États Unis d’Amérique, où il est surtout utilisé pour créer des motifs décoratifs et des tatouages dans un esprit d’identification communautaire.< Less
