Stochastic Processes in Mechanical Engineering By J.J.H. Brouwers
Paperback: $9.80
Prints in 3-5 business days
Stochastic or random vibrations occur in a variety of applications of mechanical engineering. Examples are: the dynamics of a vehicle on an irregular road surface; the variation in time of... More > thermodynamic variables in municipal waste incinerators due to fluctuations in heating value of the waste; the vibrations of an airplane flying through turbulence; the fluctuating wind loads acting on civil structures; the response of off-shore structures to random wave loading. Attention is focussed on problems of external noise. That is, models of mechanical engineering structures are considered where the source of random behavior comes from outside: e.g. a prescribed random force or a prescribed random displacement. The structures inhibit inertia, damping and restoring, linear and non-linear. Questions addressed are: how do these structures respond to random excitation, and how to quantify the random behavior of response variables in a manner that an engineer is able to make rational design decisions.< Less

MARK YOUNG's "The Codicils" is actually a number of new books, nine at least, covering his poetry in the years since the publication of "Pelican Dreaming: Poems 1959-2008." It... More > revisits some familiar themes — Magritte, geographies, that peripatectic Postman — but it also brings in a number of new streams & memes, & includes an important essay by the poet on the universality of the stochastic methodology that lies behind his poetic canon.< Less
Sard By Philip Byron Oakes
Paperback: $12.50
Prints in 3-5 business days
Often joking while performing his circus of fire eating acts, PHILIP BYRON OAKES gets around to lavish spectacles “Sooner or loiter.” Details mount and accrue, as what is... More > real—objective—is less satisfying to observe than the ritualized, impeccably imbedded electrical buzz and charge of these manic fragmented tableaux holding place as they surge. Oakes writes as he guns the motor. There is a sense of vertigo that appeals to one’s right brain and left brain simultaneously. The language swirls—a whirlpool of stochastic images encountered without fault. The poems are, I feel, impressively unimpeachable—shards of focus as imagined works of art. What we are witness to is the random miracle seemingly made plain—a vase of flowers torn from a table by a cyclone in Kansas (the house ripped to kindling) and placed down serenely in Sarasota or Reno without so much as a petal harmed. Such is the force of the poems in _Sard_. —Raymond Farr (editor of Blue & Yellow Dog)< Less
