PERIPHERAL PSYCHOSIS By Kenji Siratori, Michael Page
Paperback: $13.03

Peripheral Psychosis is the collaborative effort of renowned Cyberpunk/Bizarro author Kenji Siratori and Michael Page, artist and founder of power electronics/ambient/noise projects Fire in the Head,... More > Sky Burial and Irukandji. This work is a hybrid of Siratori’s highly experimental and uncompromising style and Page’s stream of consciousness prose and poetry where moments of lucidity punctuate the seemingly random, dis-jointed state of transcendental dream in which neurosis and technology mutate, rendering the thought process no longer recognizable as purely human. Sitting on a razor’s edge between now and never, Peripheral Psychosis requires not a suspension of disbelief, but a full suspension of belief before succumbing to a malignant nightmare mired in the grey area between dream and waking where the line between man and machine continues to blur.< Less

Sample character names include Hal, Ken, Dick, Ward, Smith, Jim, and an unscrupulous for-hire Latino generally referred to as "the Greaser." Lovely, just lovely. Societally-acceptable... More > racism aside, it's a quick and engaging, if moderately insulting, read (for, among other things, the suspension of disbelief required at frequent intervals, mostly corresponding to the practically metaphysical knowledge of forestry and government regulations that escapes our teen-aged hero's lips during long rides in the saddle in-between plot twists). And yet, it's an entertaining romp in the finest pulp tradition. Plus, I was referred to this fictionalized account of a zealous "Pinchot progressive" in the highly recommended telling of the 1910 Bitterroot Mountains fire "The Big Burn" by Timothy Egan. Yes, go read that fine book first, and then come back to consume this one.< Less

The idea that beings from other star systems could be working through animals such as horses, cows, llamas, and goats for the transformation of humanity is one that is destined to become... More > controversial. This is the groundbreaking book that puts the idea out there for public scrutiny. Even the author, Michael Murphy, admits the idea struck him as outlandish when it was proposed to him. But, Murphy coaxes the reader into a willing suspension of disbelief by telling the story of how he went from being a university faculty member to pursuing such an unlikely exploration. In narrating this odyssey, he gives tantalizing glimpses into the worlds of shamanism, animal communication, and esoteric metaphysics. Murphy ultimately spends a year of his life preparing himself and then actually dialoging with beings who claim to be star people, using animals as a channel for psychic communication. The second half of the book details these conversations and his reflections on them.< Less
