"It's not far....it's within reach" : Terrence Malick and the Search for Wholeness of the American Adam By Erik Korsman

A dissertation on cinematographer Terrence Malick and his treatment of the Adamic Adam, with his search for wholeness, in relation to the work of Melville and Whitman. The fact that Malick’s... More > cinema is approached from a literary perspective is not so strange, because the Adamic myth has always most clearly been expressed in American literature. This thesis tries to show that Malick’s cinema moves from a tragic, Melvillian treatment of the American Adam to an optimistic, Whitmanesque conception of the American Adam. If films are poetry, and Malick films are, then his films articulate a certain poetry of nature, a meditation on the place of human beings in this world and our relationship with nature. Malick’s poetic cinema let us experience the Edenic yearning almost perfectly.< Less

I probably should have called it: What Is Colin Farrell Really Like? This is the story of my summer gig working as an extra in the film The New World, which was Terrence Malick's dramatic re-creation... More > of the Jamestown experience and the life of Pocahontas, released in 2006 by New Line Cinema. I saw a story in the newspaper about auditions. I had very little acting experience, but I had had ancestors at Jamestown in the 1600s and was writing a book about some of them. So I thought it might help me to feel the ambience of Jamestown if I was "lucky" enough to make the cut. In the first scene on the first day, I had to perform next to Colin Farrell and Christopher Plummer. Everyone seemed to think I should know what to do! Overall, I think the book will give readers a new appreciation of the talent, hard work, and sheer craziness that go into the making of a big budget Hollywood film. Reynolds Price said: "I loved your account of the stint in The New World.... The whole piece is appropriately a hoot."< Less

If you ordered me at gunpoint to give you a one-sentence summary of this book, I’d probably stutter: “It’s about what I thought, observed, and experienced in 2011...please... More > don’t shoot me!” Need a more thorough introduction? Then kindly turn to the page headed “Introduction.” For now, permit me to entice you with some tags: Harry Potter, the May 21 end times prediction, New Age shenanigans, feminism, Osama bin Laden, the Norway attacks, and this year's most anticipated movies.
