An anthology of poetry written by ten women, The High Tide Poets, in Midcoast Maine. They went to Monhegan Island with the vision of creating a book of poems that reflected their unique voices.... More > "We were all so taken with the physical place (Monhegan) that we began writing “Monhegan poems” most evenings, sharing them and editing them as they were being written, a dynamic form of work-shopping none of us had ever encountered before. Thrilling to say the least. At some point, it was suggested a selection of poems written there, our Monhegan poems, be included in the anthology. Voilà, for your reading pleasure, the "Monhegan poems" are presented as a prologue to the anthology."
Inaugural Poet, Richard Blanco describes the book: "A Taste of Ink is a wonderful savoring of Maine's
words, rhythms, rhymes, and imagery served up
by these honest poems infused with the powerful
nuances of the heart that make a place, a home."< Less
Tidal ranges in the seas around the old trading harbours of Europe are frequently very considerable and often ships may be able to dock only at certain states of the tide. Sea trade, particularly to... More > river ports, goes back many hundreds of years so there must have been tide tables of some sort for many years. Had tides been more significant in the Mediterranean, then no doubt the Greeks would have analysed them and maybe even solved most of the problems for us. As it was, the great European minds of the 16th and 17th centuries were able to ponder significantly on the causes of these phenomena. After a look at the historical importance of tidal prediction, the book considers tide generating mechanisms and some of the key historical figures who have contributed to understanding the tides. Tidal prediction by harmonic fitting to existing records is next discussed and examples given with plots showing how predictions can be built up. Comprehensive references are given.< Less
