It was an early success for Brazil, and did well in the United States, perhaps as a result of the popularity of Tomboy stories, which had grown in popularity in that country since the mid 19th Century.
Her long sequence of school stories did not commence until the publication of her second novel The Fortunes of Philippa (1906).
