The Diary of a Superfluous Man and Other Stories By Ivan Turgenev
eBook (ePub): $3.99
Turgenev's shy hero, Tchulkaturin, is a representative example of a Russian archetype - the "superfluous man", a sort of Hamlet not necessarily dignified with the title Prince: an... More > individual of comfortable means leading a dreary existence, without purpose and led on by events which may, as in this story, engulf him. The novella takes the form of a diary started by Tchulkaturin in the shock of being diagnosed as having a terminal illness. The journal entries cover a period of two weeks, leading to his death. Tchulkaturin quickly homes in on the only significant event in his life - an unreciprocated falling-in-love leading haphazardly to a non-fatal duel that leaves him desolated and fully conscious of the futility of his inactive existence. - Summary by Martin Geeson< Less

First Love By Ivan Turgenev
eBook (ePub): $1.35
The title of the novella is almost an adequate summary in itself. The "boy-meets-girl-then-loses-her" story is universal but not, I think, banal - despite a surprise ending which... More > notoriously turns out to be very little of a surprise. First Love is given its originality and poignancy by Turgenev's mastery of the piercing turning-point (akin to Joyce's "epiphanies") that transforms the character's whole being, making a tragic outcome inevitable. Even the nature symbolism is rescued from triteness by lovely poetic similes - e.g. "but at that point my attention was arrested by the appearance of a speckled woodpecker who busily climbed up the slender stem of a birch-tree and peeped out uneasily from behind it, first to the right, then to the left, like a musician behind the bass-viol."< Less

The first work by Ivan Turgenev to attain wide attention, A Sportsman's Sketches is a collection of short stories mostly set amid Russia's rural population of serfs and peasants. Written by Turgenev... More > in response to the stark poverty and injustices he witnessed in Russia, the stories here depict various encounters with peasants, while the narrator himself remains unseen. Each different tale illustrates a different injustice, with characters often ordinary peasants scraping a living off the land. Others, such as the dwarf Kasyan, combine a love of folklore with a distaste for the society they live and work within. Some peasants are kindly and popular, while others are thrifty and wise - in spite of their shared circumstances, Turgenev paints a picture of a countryside which contained both arable beauty and social neglect. Although some of Turgenev's stories are short anecdotes which state a simple point before concluding, others colourfully expound upon their subjects and environment.< Less
