ONE HUNDRED DAYS By >>areml photography [+] DESIGN

One Hundred Days started mostly on a whim. I had been wanting to challenge myself with a daily project of some sort, and wondered how to go about it. It wasn’t until I took the shot you see on... More > the following page that I decided to do it, just like that. The rules were simple – once a day for 100 days straight I would take a daily shot which I would then embellish with some sort of typographic treatment. The piece would have to be independent of any other work I was doing and had to be completed on-the-fly (meaning no preparation). I tried very hard not to over think and wanted to cultivate a spontaneous feel that was fun and simple. No real planning was ever involved, and as much as possible I used personal elements that would reflect my life and say something about who I am and how I see the world. It was an experiment that focused on the random elements of everyday life and the language of photography and graphic design.< Less
Expanding The Radius By Mary Ellen Derwis, Joe Balaz

Early on in EXPANDING THE RADIUS, Mary Ellen Derwis gives us an untitled narrative sequence of digital art, hinting at the human form, which picks up again towards the end of the book in a more... More > figurative sequence— “Rendezvous”. Intimate portraits, wider anthropological insights, and other strongly titled art also prevail. Among other tightly woven directives, Joe Balaz includes multi-paged narrations “High in Blue”, “Fairly Textual”, and “The Industrial Poet”. Then there are the collaborations which find a distinct third voice, as often happens when two people are so creatively in synch. The book ends with two of Mary Ellen’s urban shots that include typographical symbols and a similar photo, a final pun by Joe— “C and Leave”. Many of these images have appeared separately in the quarterly “Otoliths”; now it’s a pleasure to see/read this combined three headed body of always direct, sometimes humorous, often profound digital art, visual poetry, and collaborations. —C.
