Approximately 10,000 "War Crimes Trials" have been held since 1945. Trials of Japanese military personnel ended in 1949, yet "war crimes trials" of Germans and Eastern Europeans... More > continue to date. Almost invariably, the charge is "violation of the laws and customs of war," derived, in turn, from international conventions signed at the Hague in 1899 and 1907. That these trials have little or no basis in law is clear from the wording of the treaties which are said to have been violated. The illegalities of "war crimes" proceedings include the admissibility of oral and written hearsay; the introduction of the concept of "conspiracy" into international law (unknown prior to 1945); the total lack of any pre-trial inquest or forensic evidence; and trial before a court itself composed of actual "war criminals."< Less
The Crimes of England By G.K. Chesterton
eBook (ePub): $4.99
(12 Ratings)
The Crimes of England is a series of essays written during the Great War that highlight, in Chesterton's learned and generally witty opinion, the failings of his country. The collection opens with a... More > letter to Professor Whirlwind, a German whose name 'is too much for me', and who has been writing articles attacking England in the newspapers of the day. Chesterton savagely and cleverly whittles the Professor down to a very small nub indeed, and then he goes on to highlight his own problems with England. His criticism of the German soul and the English failings in (then) recent times are juxtaposed to great effect. Chesterton ends his essays with a plea to his fellow Englishmen not to avoid criticising their nation but to embrace it. He writes, “I have passed the great part of my life in criticising and condemning the existing rulers and institutions of my country: I think it is infinitely the most patriotic thing that a man can do.”< Less
The Crimes of England By G.K. Chesterton
eBook (ePub): $4.58
Chesterton's "The Crimes Of England" was written in 1916 and needs to be read , and perhaps forgiven, as a product of the Great War. The "crimes" in the title are essentially an... More > ironic reference. Most of the "crimes" Chesterton relate to the preceding three hundred years to instances where English policy was too pro-German, or at least, too pro-Prussian by Chesterton's estimate. The list of crimes include too much support for Frederick the Great and too little support for the French Revolution. Even the crime of England's brutal response to the Irish rebellions of 1789 - something Chesterton lets loose against - was made worse by the Germanic element in the royal family and the Army's use of German mercenaries against the Irish. Chesterton ends his essays with a plea to his fellow Englishmen not to avoid criticising their nation but to embrace it.< Less
