During a conversation with a Japanese Professor from the Department of Economics of the University of London I asked why Japan waged the war with the United States. With face contorted with anxiety... More > he repeatedly asserted that he does not know anything about it and, being too young, he did not take part in the war. Several years later, visiting the University of Tokyo, I asked one of the professors the same question and received a similar answer, with the exception that even though he participated in the war, he did not know anything about why the war did happen. During the fare-well party, in the wee hours in the morning, I asked the professor the same question. With his defenses lowered by the consumed sake he answered “to liberate Asia from the Western domination.” My curiosity aroused, I carried several studies on this topic in both the United States and Japan. Instead, population size has been and remains the overwhelming determinant of war victory since 1816. Population sizes of countries in the international system are so varied that it is virtually impossible for a small nation to withstand the military onslaught of a larger foe, a finding that reasserts basic tenets of realism to modern foreign policy discussions. The importance of the size and quality of a country's population is demonstrated via statistical analyses of a new dataset of 19th and 20th century international wars as well as case studies of Arab-Israeli Wars (1948-1973) and the German invasion of France in 1940.< Less
