We were educated by the New York City school system but mostly by the tenacity of "la vieja escuela". It was a rough neighborhood. Not at all like the Williamsburg of today with its pricey lofts, tree lined streets, coffee bars and sushi restaurants. It was a dirty, stinky neighborhood with weeds growing from the cracks in the cement and empty lots full of trash and burnt cars. It was home. It was what we knew.
