New Hanover County was formed in 1729, from Craven County. New Hanover will be continually subdivided, beginning with the formation of Bladen and Onslow County in 1734, followed by Duplin County in... More > 1750, and Brunswick County in 1764. Finally, in a more modern era, Pender County will be carved out of New Hanover in 1875. Despite the age, the colonial records were not preserved. In addition, the researcher will have to analyze the date and pick the county that the record might reside in, due to so many counties birthed from it. Duplin County has no preserved records (road, bridge, mill, ferry, ordinary - type records), Bladen has only modern records (1900s), however, Onslow has a nice set (already transcribed), and Brunswick (already transcribed) has a modest collection. THERE are some Civil War related records detailing burned bridges and damaged ferries.< Less

New Hanover County was formed in 1729, from Craven County which was formed from the original County of Bath (1705). New Hanover “birthed” several counties, beginning in 1734, forming... Certainly an old county, yet, none of the early colonial records IN THIS collection survive (as well as the road, bridge and ferry records). Miscellaneous land records are a “catch all” of land disputes, agreements, surveys, procession, etc. This two-box collection is placed in alphabetical order and not date order. Therefore, Box 1 is “A-M” and Box 2 “P-S” both boxes span the years of 1748 to 1950. New Hanover County also has a 1-box collection of Ejectments (land disputes) planned for a future release.This volume contains more modern records than old. Although they are intermixed (alpha order not date).< Less
