Memoirs of Childhood was composed in Nigeria in 1993. I was motivated to write the music for
three reasons. First, Nigerian art music composers have written some interesting pieces for
piano;... More > however, these pieces are far too advanced to arouse the interest in children and adult
pianists. Thus, I decided to compose simpler pieces in an African style to introduce children and
adults to playing these complex works. Second, Memoirs of Childhood represents my
articulation of some of the theories on African pianism. By African pianism we mean an African
piano style created by modern African composers. Third, in Memoirs of Childhood, I intend to
capture some of the various socio-cultural and religious experiences that surround children as
they grow up in Nigeria.< Less
