The first movement is based on a popular Yoruba folk song titled, "Olurombi." The second movement in the key of A major is built on a Yoruba Christian song, "Ise Oluwa ko le baje" (The Work of the Lord is indestructible). The last piece, "Iya Ni Wura Iyebiye" (Mother is a priceless jewel), is also a derivation of another popular Yoruba folk song. All the three movements are actually a re-setting of pieces from another major composition of mine titled, Childhood Dreams for Piano Solo.< Less

More > this work creates a nostalgia for my home country, Nigeria. Memories of singing the song at Eko Boys' High School Choir in Lagos readily comes to mind. The work is in four main sections. Some of the Africanisms employed in the work are the scintillating dance rhythms, parallel harmony, ostinati, interlocking rhythms, and the juxtaposing of constant and varied rhythmic patterns. The instrumentation includes flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, bassoon, horn in F, trumpet in C, trombone, tuba, timpani, 2 violins, viola, violin cello, and double bass.< Less
