Buncombe County Road records are a collection of petitions and law suits dealing with roadways, streets (Asheville), and the Buncombe Co. Turnpike. Old maps are included, specifically dealing with... More > the county, as well as the Turnpike. Several maps and drawings were in this collection, which are also included in this book. Primarily, these records represent the roads around Asheville, and several dealing with streets within Asheville. Of all the county records which I have transcribed, this county has more law suits than any other. Therefore, there are more legal arguments, than petitions for a new road, altered road, or discontinuing a road. Sadly, no bridge records were located. Each document was photographed (so you can see the signatures), and then the pertinent parts are transcribed and indexed for quick searching. Modern maps are included if they can assist in locating the old-area being discussed.< Less

Warren County road record collection span several boxes in the State Archives. However, due to time constraints, I only photographed and transcribed the earliest records in this collection. In... More > addition I DID NOT photograph the numerous overseer assignments, which can be read in their original form (in the archives) or located in the County Court records. The petitions are NOT contained in the court minutes, beyond registering the petition and decision. However, overseer records tend to be completely entered in the minutes (since they are so brief). The petitions, due to their lengthy discussions, and more importantly, the Jury decision for the road route, are included in this collection. These records provide the reason and the description for the location of the road (or it's alteration). This collection has a lot of alteration type records.< Less

The Battle of Pyle’s Defeat was the bloodiest ten minutes of all Alamance County history. On February 24, 1781, a few hundred yards of Alamance County (then Orange County) were stained red with... More > the blood of a few hundred local citizens. Nearly 100 Tory soldiers were killed, with another 100 taken prisoner, wounded, or unaccounted. For generations historians have pondered what really happened at this killing field without any real depth of rationality. Some have just simply replaced fact with convenient speculation of where the hacking actually took place. Our answer to these contemporaries, and their agendas, is the comprehensive presentation in this work, of the letters, memoirs, and field notes of the men who participated. Besides the insight gained from these writings, we provide the reader the proper locations and mileage by plotting the actual routes. It was not our wish when we started this project to revise history, but to correct the myths that have been perpetuated since 1849.< Less
