In this context, the goal of this research is to study the traffic speed and vehicle trajectory factors that affect crosswalk law compliance and stopping distance from the crosswalk. The results of this research provide new insights into the relationships between traffic conditions, vehicle trajectory and compliance rates. Results indicate that vehicle origin, vehicle type, stopping at upstream traffic lights, and changes in vehicle speed and headways are key factors to predict pedestrian crosswalk law compliance and stopping behavior; changes in vehicle speed and headways have the highest explanatory power.< Less

More > (TRUE) system includes a smart phone application to collect Global Positioning System (GPS) data. This surpasses other GPS data due to its level of geographic detail and potential to integrate trip origin and destination, vehicle class, and commodity data. This research evaluates the accuracy of TRUE data and demonstrates its use in freight modeling, performance measures, and planning applications. The use of data for highly accurate trip-generation rates and mobility performance measures is demonstrated. TRUE data has strong potential in measuring safety, accessibility and connectivity, system condition and environmental stewardship. The potential for use in emissions estimates including speed profiles and truck type is examined. Integration with weigh-in-motion data will vastly improve emission estimate accuracy.< Less

The Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) is used to mitigate urban traffic congestion. This research combines SCATS research areas including: a) the relationship between SCATS, traffic... More > volumes, and Transit Signal Priority (TSP); b) between TSP and traffic conditions; and c) the correlation between signal timing and air quality. SCATS showed significant speed improvement at a minor intersection, though major intersection results were mixed. Non-priority signals had a greater impact on travel time than priority signals. A regression model of intersection delays showed major intersections with high cross-street volumes are not likely to experience TSP benefits. Signal timing and queuing have a high impact on pedestrian exposure. Longer green times along the main corridor significantly reduced particulate matter, whereas longer street crossing time increased queuing and exposure. Reduced bus idling time and proper bus shelter orientation are likely to reduce pollution exposure significantly.< Less
