Lawrence A. Dysart was a Department Store owner and innovator in a small town in Maine through the Great Depression, World War Two, and into the early 1970's. When most small stores were closing in the face of the shopping mall and big box store revolution, he continued to be successful. This book delves into the secrets to his success as well as a brief glimpse of small town America in the middle of the 20th Century.

I read this book, Caring Enough to Succeed: The Story of LA Dysart in Pittsfield, ME, with great interest! The book was given to me by a family friend who knew the Dysart family very well. This book is clear and concise! It is just long enough to remind one of small town life in New England in the 40’s and 50’s and not too long for those who aren’t historians. I like how he used first hand interviews and the anecdotes from Mr. Dysart’s sales and service over the years. I really felt like I got to know Mr. Dysart and he reminded me of my childhood and some of the people I knew as a boy. Bravo to Mr. Gower for shedding some light on a little known man who should be more well known and Bravo to Mr. Dysart for having such an impact on this town and it’s citizens!! It’s 38 pages of pleasant time travel!
