I was gifted this collection of poems at a time when I was in a phase of change by none other than the author himself. Little did I know that it would resonate so strongly with me, and change my lens on "charity", self and life. Alternating between stream of consciousness prose and rhythmic rhymes, Shanil's musings capture with enviable ease, the journey through the confusion that our youth presents to many of us. Whether you savour the poems individually or altogether as a compilation, you cannot escape the vivacity and vibrance with which Shanil describes his mental and emotional landscape. it is Shanil's unwaveringly authentic voice that reels the reader in, with heart & soul. Whisperings is truly visceral...a quality that many writers seek to embody in their work, but few actually manage to do so.

An eloquent collection of poems that comes alive with its perfect blend of imagery, rhythm, emotion, and insight. I could read these poems over and over and still gather more meaning from them each time. Can't wait to see how Shanil's writing evolves, and journey unfolds.

Shanil uses his impressive literary technique to play on that ache that exists in all of us who feel deeply, using evocative imagery to draw a vivid connection with a greater human experience. The themes in his work are often heavy but handled with a refreshing lack of pretension. Sometimes dark, always delicate, his voice is a relatable dichotomy of strength and vulnerability.

Whisperings is reflective of the wisdom exuberated through the author Shanil Samarakoon. These poems paint a gateway to a unique journey of experience and exploration of self, as well as the redemptive and transformative lessons realised on this journey. Through these poems there is a humbleness, appreciation and wisdom that shines through, one that will surely reach into the depths of human emotion and realisation. Beautiful, raw and moving.

Covering topics from childhood escapism, struggling with our own thoughts and expectations, and questioning our intentions behind contribution, Shanil's work can be related to on so many levels, and at many different points in life. "Is this the world we will permit to exist? Or shall we unite and for change persist? For when these cries pierce every street, Freedom is ours in the oppressor's defeat" For someone who has never been good with poetry, I found these works painted scenes and moments in my mind with great clarity and feeling. They are accessible, relatable, and wonderfully written.
