Dec 9, 2009Tough Tommy by Sharon Burns, is a charmingly illustrated picture book that handles a “tough” topic very well. When Tommy Turtle’s Daddy dies unexpectedly, Tommy is devastated—the pond he and his Mommy and Daddy always loved to swim in turns dark and scary and Tommy no longer likes doing all the things he always enjoyed. He is angry and deeply sad, but over time, through talking to his Mommy and other turtles who loved his Daddy, the sadness begins to lighten. Tommy decides to keep a journal to express his feelings which helps him to talk about and remember his Daddy with love. Burns addresses this serious issue with humor and warmth yet without any sugar coating. She acknowledges the despair and the pain that death brings to a young child while at the same time showing in a kid-friendly manner how life does go on. Eventually, life becomes bearable for Tommy and realizes his Daddy’s love is always there forever in his heart. Children will enjoy the artwork, which is kid-like and fun... More > with just the right mix of being light-hearted yet poignant, a perfect compliment to Burns’ bitter-sweet and important message, which will touch children and adults alike. Nov 19, 2009As the director of a center for grieving children and families I found Tough Tommy to be a gentle and honest portrayal of the grief process. It has been a useful tool to help begin conversations in our childrens groups. The concept of not being alone and of hope reinforce what we believe here and are very comforting to children as well as adults. The beautiful illustrations capture each child's attention. Tough Tommy is a wonderful addition to our library. I recommend it to children of all ages who are grieving. Lisa Peluso, Executive Director Mary's Place, A Center for Grieving Children and Families
Oct 25, 2009As a kindergarten teacher I am always looking for children's literature that conveys a lesson or value that is easy for children to relate to their own experiences. Tough Tommy is one of those beautifully written stories that touches the hearts of children because everyone has had a loss that has left them saddened, whether it has been a pet, a toy or a loved one. This wonderful book is enhanced by beautiful illustrations that keep even the youngest readers enraptured. This is a great choice for children, parents, grandparents and teachers.
