Martin slid his body down behind a curved bluff in the mountains at Lake Sumner. He sat in the shadow as the sun made for its exit.
Martin looked down at the blood running from both legs and his left side. He grabbed his last pistol, last clips. He waited.
“Can’t be dead,” Martin said. “’Cause you boys don’t look like angels to me.”
“Who sent you?” one man said, kicking Martin’s wound. “Why are you here?”
The man kicked Martin again, but he didn’t drop his cigar.
“Why the hell do you care why I’m here?” he asked. “You got me. Let’s do it. Just me, I’m afraid, sorry."
“You’re connected. Gotta be. Who are you with?”
“Me,” came a beautiful female voice from behind them.
They turned fast and she shot them all, all but the one who’d kicked Martin’s leg. Martin used his last bullet on him.
“You are, I must say again, the craziest man I’ve ever met,” she said, helping him up.
“Chloe, I love you,” he said, grabbed her weakly, kissed her and passed out.
