The Pumpkin Is a Hatchback is a story about a woman trying to make sense of herself. Writing in the candid style of her own diary, Sheila Lightfoot addresses mental health and how it is affected by the events of one's life, including abuse at the hands of those in a position of trust.
Growing up in rural Ontario, Stella Collier lived in fear
of a strange man coming to snatch her away from the only world she has ever known - a threat planted by her mother. This world, initially full of magic and mystery,
becomes darker and darker until Stella finds herself unable or unwilling to connect to anything. But, there is an uncanny similarity between Stella's life and her favourite fairy tale, Cinderella.
