Trusting The Theology of A Slave Owner

BySherard Burns

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Jonathan Edwards, America's greatest theologian, was a slave owner and a supporter of the slave trade. His thinking and writings are unparalleled. His mind was as sharp as any in history. Yet, he owned slaves. The theology of Edwards is absent, for the most part, in African American churches because of this. While I have long thought this to be a great loss of our churches I completely understood how many blacks could hold his theology at a distance. Yet, i am convinced that what Edwards wrote is rich and worthy of our reflection, even with this sin in his life. This booklet is my attempt to show how and why it is right, good and helpful for us, African American Christians, to trust the theology of a slave owner. Yes, he owned slaves, but his teachings and writings about theology and the Christain life are of great worth and value. Sin is the proof of our humanity. It never concludes that our words and work are of no value. We all must praise God for this great truth.
