Based on a true story, “Suzanne Degnan” is told through the eyes of Sarah, a young bassist whose musical dreams are challenged when she and her band move into a Chicago apartment building that turns out to be a murder-vortex. Back in 1946, the building was the scene of “The Crime of the Century;” where six-year old Suzanne Degnan was abducted and murdered in the basement. Sarah and her band, Veronica’s Car Crash, have no idea that their home holds such a horrendous history, but Sarah is sensitive to the unseen world and soon the ghost of Suzanne Degnan is waking her up at 3 in the morning. The spirit of the little girl is sometimes so angry that she appears as a demon, attacking Sarah and sending the lives of the band members into a tumultuous whirlwind.

"Sherry Wood hits her stride..." "Everyone is Chuckers" hit me like a safe dropped out of an upper floor of the Sears tower, and came across as something like the surrealist nightmares of William Burroughs intersecting with the 90s Neoism of Stewart Home. "The Devil's Bathwater" delivered Wood's take on the coming-of-age genre best exemplified by S.E. Hinton, updating it and showing the same sense of tenderness and poetry that Hinton showed toward her generation of lost children and teenage outcasts. In "Suzanne Degnan," Wood shatters expectations again and invites the reader to let her tell them a ghost story. The setting is similar to "Chuckers;" 90s Chicago, Boy's Town, and its underworld of musicians, punks, squatters, hustlers, and suburban thrill-seekers. But, the masochism and shock-value that was out front and all over "Chuckers," like the fresh, self-inflicted wounds on a gutter-punk's chest, is notably absent.... She executes it deftly, like a grunge version of Stephen King.< Less
