"Grueling and harsh and beautiful" Devil's Bathwater is a short novel at less than 150 pages, but you don't want to read it fast, you want to savor it slowly. Poor Corbin's, told with harsh intense language, is so bitterly true its painful to read at times. And that pain that comes with reading is the mark of real poetry. The book starts out with Corbin already playing the role of a victim, saved from a creep by her mom and taken out of "the city." It doesn't say which city and it doesn't matter, the juxtaposition of any city works to play up the setting of rural county Devil's Bathwater. The young girl's life seems to go from worse to worse, as her only friend is her cousin (with heavy incenstual overtones...) and her new family is abusive and then she makes the mistakes with asshole guys that all girls seem to make. Coming-of-age and all that, we journey with Corbin as she grows up into a woman who can control her own life instead of a child who is controlled... More > by others. It took a lot of mistakes and horror to get there. Sadly, the worst is not the physical pain such as when her macho creepy uncle strips her and spanks her; the worst is to be abandoned. Locked up in the shed, mother far away and uncaring, and rejection from the statutory rapist lover. Anybody can deal with the physical suffering that comes with life, but strength is leaning to be alone. The prose is beautiful. Observational tidbits on macaroni and cheese, awkward descriptions of how a boy's penis looks like a weird extraneous attachment, metaphors of storms, words like maggots, black laughter, and the unique screams of beaten children. This is the work of a promising and talented writer. I look forward to reading future Sherry Wood, I'm paying attention...< Less
