This is a cheaper, more compact version of the previously published book, now available at the new low price of £9.99. Skywings, the magazine of the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, said this in their May 2014 issue: "I was lucky enough to be able to fly quite a bit in the Lake District a long time ago, but more recently circumstances have made it much harder for me to fly there. I was therefore intrigued to discover that last year, over a period of ten months, Simon Blake had flown all of the 214 'Wainwright' peaks. A unique achievement not likely to be repeated very soon, if at all. Not only that Simon had also written a book about it which I just had to buy immediately. I was not disappointed. Flying the Wainwrights is not just a madcap summit-bagging romp, it is also a race (mainly against the dastardly Mike Cavanagh!); a journey of learning, discovery and persistence; and a sensitive tour of the area by someone who clearly knows and loves it well. Do... More > not let the fact that Simon used a mini wing to 'bag' many of the peaks by hard walking and flying down put you off. The change from the more usual points-and-kilometres ethos of cross-country flying is truly refreshing, taking us to parts of the Lake District seldom reached by paraglider pilots. Simon does some good soaring flights too and will no doubt be clocking up kilometres in the future. Unless you know the Lake District very well you will need an OS map or an online mapping source to follow Simon's progress; he assures me that grid references will be inserted into the book by the time you read this (print-on-demand enables such rapid revision). Flying The Wainwrights is not a glossy picture book, but any paraglider pilot should find it fun to read and want to do some of these things. There are a few I think I will try and avoid, however. Simon is very honest about some of the more 'interesting' moments! This is real adventure on our doorstep in the UK, and an excellent read. Well done Simon.< Less
