This book deals very sensitively with the issues of friendship and the value of choosing the 'right' friends. A child, Sunshine, has become dependent on one of his peers which is not healthy for him but is driven by his need to belong. When it seems his life may be ruined by this friendship, he finds a new friend Rain, who shows him how to take back control of his life. The story contains a wealth of ma-terial for discussion with children who have found themselves in this position and offers many opportunities for schools to use in Primary classrooms, as well as by parents and guardians, as a starting point for helping children to 'break free' of others, who may be adversely affecting their social health and happiness.

"A powerful and motivating book!" This is an absolute gem of a book! It could be used in so many ways and speaks to so many people and aspects of life. I think this book would be beneficial for use with younger as well as older children alike, all will gain something out of the book on their own level. With particular children in mind and recent events that had happened in my class (Yr 6) I chose to use the book in a Literacy lesson. The children for whom I had specifically chosen the book, when I began reading it, their faces were a picture really...they knew immediately without me saying anything that I had chosen that story because of them....and it did the job and hit home....the whole class had major discussions on so many issues within the story. Fantastic! The children loved the simplicity of the text, yet it said so much to them. We also spent ages discussing the illustrations and what they represented and could mean or did mean. Spent so much time on the book that... More > we didn’t actually get to doing the literacy lesson that was intended yet so many other aims and objectives were met and covered in the process. The story engaged all the pupils in my class; EAL and SEN children who rarely engage in lessons also contributed to the lesson. What a brilliant piece of writing and work. Thank you for this little, or as the author says ‘not so little’, master piece it speaks volumes on so many levels and in so many ways. I think the use of this book in education, in the classroom, is only limited by our own minds and the way we think to apply it.< Less

"An early intervention to gang culture?" This book, if used well at an early age, may well have lasting repecussions for children as they grow older, into adolescents, and face the problems of peer pressure and the pressure to deals beautifully with the issue of NOT going with the 'gang', of following the person with the 'most power' - it asks 'how can I make the right choice for ME?' The boy, always in trouble with the wrong friend sees how, if he makes a choice, now, to have 'good' friends, he can avoid the consequences of a future of problems and trouble. If this book was to be used at Primary age - Key Stage1 - it could have a powerful and positive effect on our children as they grow older and ensure they stay on the right side of the law later. Excellent.
