"Commitments On Hold - A Great Read!" This is one of those books that has you cursing the author for making you neglect all your household chores, so you can keep reading to the end. Intents and Purposes weaves its magic spell from the gripping opening, and the enchantment never lets up, staying with you long after the final chapter. Two English women - Nicole - on the run from her husband Gideon in Florida - and Tallulah - ekeing out a drab existence in the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield - are pivotal to the tightly-knit, well-structured plot. The way their lives become entwined is compelling, as is the 'journey' both make over the course of the novel. Their paths cross in the beautifully evoked Peak District village of Castleton, where frumpy Tallulah is staying in her cousin Robert's remote cottage to sort through his things after his death in a road accident. There she meets Robert's friend Jeff and his neighbour Ursula, who has made Nicole's acquaintance, and through... More > them all discovers there's more to life than working in a lingerie shop. Nicole thinks she has it all, but reckons without the power of betrayal and spitefulness, and she too comes to appreciate what is important in life. The supporting characters come alive on the page, especially Tallulah's feisty Gran. Even the baddies are lovably hateable! But it is Tallulah, the forty-something spinster with the worrying health problem, whose story most moves us, as bit by bit she discovers a new zest for life and realizes that she too can pursue her dreams. Simon Temprell really succeeds in making us feel the cold English winter and want to be in Castleton with Tallulah and co, as the events unfold. Add liberal doses of witchcraft, the supernatural, murderous revenge and drugs, plus wry social comment and a warm observational humour in the dialogue that reminds one of Alan Bennett and Victoria Wood plays, and you have a poignant, yet uplifting tale which will bring a tear to your eye and a lump to your throat. Altogether, an unputdownable book, and a pile of laundry that had to wait till I'd finished it.< Less
