Composed by St. Adæus and St. Maris, Teachers of the Easterns. St Adæus/Addai/Thaddaeus was one of the 72 original disciples sent out to spread the faith and one of the great apostles to Syria and Persia. He started preaching the Gospel in Mesopotamia, Syria and Persia and helped in building up the Church in these regions. The Syriac liturgy referred to as the Divine Liturgy of Addai and Mari, originated around the year 200 A.D. and is used by the Assyrian Church of the East. He was also sent by Saint Thomas the Apostle to heal King Abgar the Black, a correspondent of Jesus’ who had fallen ill. He then stayed to evangelize, and converted Abgar and his people including Saint Aggai and Saint Mari. Saint Maris of Persia was born to nobility, husband of Saint Martha, father of Saint Audifax and Saint Abachum. He was a convert who gave his fortune to the poor. Martyred with his whole family in the persecutions of Aurelian. He was beheaded in 270 at Saint Ninfa 13 miles from Rome, Italy.
