The Divine Liturgy of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark, The Disciple of the Holy Peter
BySir James DonaldsonArthur Cleveland
Mark the Evangelist is the traditional author of the Gospel of Mark. He is one of the Seventy Disciples, and the founder of the Church of Alexandria, one of the original four main episcopal sees of Christianity. He is also honored as the founder of Christianity in Africa. St Peter took Mark as travel companion and interpreter. when he escaped out of the realm of Herod Agrippa I. Mark the Evangelist wrote down the sermons of Peter, thus composing the Gospel according to Mark. After the Ascension of Jesus and the death of Peter, Mark traveled to Alexandria and founded the Church of Alexandria, which today is part of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Aspects of the Coptic liturgy can be traced back to Mark himself. The Divine Liturgy of St. Mark is the ancient, traditional main Liturgy of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria. It also has the most ancient documentation of any Orthodox Liturgy still in use.
