On Consecrated Ground

BySlade GarrisonAlex Gilmore

Someone asked me a question I thought I would better prepared for, in truth, I never thought it was a question I couldn’t answer. He asked me what scared me. I couldn’t answer him. Every act of depravity imaginable has been written about, played out in theatre and movies and even done by people. These days you still see soccer mom’s and preacher’s children cringe at the sight of blood, but every teenager and adolescent is so desensitized to violence and gore that nothing is left to scare them. We’ve moralized and made fiction of every beast and lore of legend and myth. The things that go bump in the night have been banished to the dark of deep woods and the lost places of world. City streets glow with neon and cars light our paths from one place to another. There are no skulking shadows following us home, only other people. In the hopes that there is a single person left in the world who remembers why we used to be afraid of the dark...I give you a collection of dark things.
