"Great subject but not a great book" As with all lulu books, the actual volume is cheap but acceptable. Indeed the cover is rather attractive; an interesting photograph of a member of the Assyrian levies suggests that a story of "my service with the levies" may follow. But what is inside is a bit disappointing. It is billed as a collection of articles; but 150 words describing "they went here, they fought here, they went back again" is not very interesting. Most of the articles seem to have little more detail than this; but I got bored very quickly. Surely there are contemporary accounts -- letters, and so on -- of the events, I asked myself? Surely the people concerned had personalities, wives, histories? None of this appears. Who are these people, we ask; and do not find out. The most interesting is the description of the defence of an RAF station against German-led Iraqi forces. This is longer, and the photographs are superb, although the printing is... More > rather grainy. The book needs to tell a story, not just be a set of working notes. A model for this could be Churchill's "River War"; a more modern one on the same subject would be Michael Asher's "Khartoum". There is clearly a great book waiting to be written on this subject. The human interest is palpable! But this book is not it. It seems to contain no references to sources, unfortunately -- footnotes would help a lot. The author would be well advised to hand it to a friend who has never heard of the Assyrians and get him to read it. The friend won't get beyond page 14, I would guess. A professional editor would fix many of these problems; but really the author should have another go! He should abandon the division of material into articles, and write a history of the Levies, starting with *why* they were raised, describing what it was like to be a Levy, and a Levy officer, helping us to follow 'characters' in various campaigns, and finishing with their demobilisation and the reasons for it. Perhaps Dr Solomon will do this one day.< Less
