"Re: Review of "Visit Europe with Me"" Thank you for the review. It's wonderful to learn that my book had evoked your personal experiences/feelings in Europe long time ago. I am looking forward to reading your new book.

I just this morning finished reading your lovely book “Visit Europe with Me”, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It brought to light a completely different side of you that I hadn't realized was so big a part of who you are. Such an appreciation of history and the political implications of things that occurred so far in the past. I never really learned much about European history in school, and what I do know (or think I know) came from reading books, or maybe a snippet here and there from talking to friends or small references in the paper related to current events. For six weeks in the summer of 1975, I went to Europe with a group of about 30 students, a few of which I knew, but most I met the first day. We stayed in hotels, most of the time, but three places, Germany, Austria, and Greece, we were each most fortunate to be hosted for three to five days in a small town by a family in their home, where I was able to see how they live. We were matched with a family that had someone about my... More > age. I woke up with them, ate breakfast, lunch, and supper with them, went to school with them. In Austria, my host was a farmer and I even got to help slop the pigs and feed the chickens. The program, called “People-to-People Student Ambassador program” (originally started by President Eisenhower) was designed to promote an exchange of cultures. I did indeed learn a great deal about small town life in those three small towns. The rest of the time was spent on a whirlwind guided tour of England, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, (a brief stop in communist Romania due to technical difficulties with our airplane), Greece, Italy, and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Sorry to say, I did not get to France, as French was the only foreign language I had taken in high school. I saw lots of landmarks and museums, but was probably too young to really appreciate what I was seeing. Your book took me back to that time where I, too, was caught in my imagination with images of romantic love, where every stranger I met inspired me to wonder who they were, how they lived, and strange languages and customs often overwhelmed my senses and sensibilities. My first kiss occurred on that trip (with a German girl who barely spoke English). I, too, walked through Anna Franks house. One of the most important German words I learned while there was also “bier”. I loved the passion and the baring-of-your-soul that you included in your book. Rather than a dry description of historical sites and events, you made it genuine and emotion-filled, and consequently, inspirational. I had no idea you were an artist (in charcoal). My sister Rebecca is a professional artist and has done several pieces in charcoal, among many other mediums see for her gallery's web site. Single Sarah Sophia, the romantic observer and political philosopher. I liked the bountiful vocabulary which helped to convey vivid imagery and heartfelt emotions. Your perspective and thoughts on how oppressed people think based in part on your experiences and historical knowledge of Taiwan and China were particularly interesting. It is wonderful to follow along as you explore and contemplate the European cultures and history of conquest. I especially enjoyed the vicarious meetings I had through your personal descriptions of the various fellow travelers you came in contact with. The book has inspired me to make an exploration of the historical venues of Europe, and has also stimulated me to put the effort forth to finish my own book.< Less
