"Bancroft - The Story of a Pennine Weaving Shed" Stanley Graham is well placed to write this book about a cotton weaving mill in the north of England - he spent many years working at Bancroft Mill, in charge of the Steam Engine. This job required him to spend a lot of time about the mill, allowing him to observe the work taking place in the `shed' and spend time chatting to the other workers, from the Boss, to those on the weaving looms. There are `Tea Breaks' in the narrative, where stories told by a tackler, Fred Inman, are related. These provide a further description of the mill and of life outside with a view from a different perspective. The book offers the reader an insight into the various aspects of the mill, and the daily preparation needed to get the boiler fired up and then the starting of the engine. Once the engine was in motion, power was transmitted through drive belts to the looms, sometimes with unexpected results which are definitely worth reading about!... More > The book also describes other processes - such as tape sizing, looming and twisting, and winding before the cloth is produced on the looms. The human element is also important - the work was hard but there was companionship to be found in the mill. The numbers of employees and occupations is highlighted by the list of people working at Bancroft in 1941. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and the addition of plans and photographs help to provide a fully rounded description of work at Bancroft. I now feel as if I knew the mill in the 1970s. The informative description of the final days of the mill, the weaving out, and finally the stopping of the engine was very evocative of an era which is now long gone.< Less

"Bancroft. Authors review" Bancroft is my second publication in what will become a series. I've spent 40 years researching and it seems to be fighting to get out! If you've ever wanted to know how a weaving shed worked and about the people in it, this is for you. All the information comes from the people who worked at Bancroft, straight from the horse's mouth. Fully illustrated. Enjoy.
