With Teaching Mythology Exposed, Starr Sackstein is reaching out to a wide audience of educators, offering up a breadth of anecdotes from her own varied experience and guiding philosophies from her years as a standout classroom practitioner, parent and online collaborator. Her format is a unique blend of discussion, anecdote, personal reflection, advice, guiding reflection questions and resources that ought to serve as a text and a professional journal template for pre-service and beginning teachers coming into today's profession. The myths she writes about, which include tackling taboos about students, parents, administrators, workloads, teacher prep programs and the ultimate fallacy about teachers needing to know everything at all times, are all too pervasive in a profession that often leaves its people alone to figure out solutions to issues. Sackstein's book is written with the necessary confidence of someone who works hard and accepts that fewer things than ever can be counted on... More > once her classes start and the humility that it takes to not only admit her imperfections, but also accept growing from them as one of her professional joys. Even the "solutions/practical applications" pieces in each chapter admit that things aren't always going to go well. A great addition - and testament to the connected approach to her connection - are the links scattered throughout (some of which bring you to her extensive blog) and the resources section at the end. If professionals and prep programs are willing to speak openly about the state of our work and think critically about their own efforts, I'd highly recommend Starr's book as a model and a guide.< Less

I could not agree more with Michele! This book is a great read for new and veteran teachers alike. Debunking myths in education is so essential for teachers trying to find their way in this business. We need to focus on kids, relationships, and learning and cannot allow anything else to get in the way. I don't think any of us escape the beginning years of teaching without subscribing to a few of these myths. However, if new teachers read Starr's work that can change! I would highly recommend this book to any educator, it is a very worthwhile read and highly applicable to our profession.

Reflection is a key ingredient for learning. Teachers are learners and the best ones are always reflecting on their practices. Starr Sackstein is the epitome of a reflective educator. Teaching Mythology Exposed is a collection of myths that teachers have shared with Starr or that she experienced first-hand. Myths that formed because of misconceptions or ignorance. This book helps us to reflect upon these myths, question them, and learn from them. It is packed full of practical applications and solutions and is a must-read for new and veteran teachers alike. As a veteran educator with 22 years experience, I found myself chuckling as I read myths that I used to believe were true. I also thought about colleagues who still believe some of the myths and how important it is for educators to connect. When we know better, we do better. The supplemental materials and reflective questions in Teaching Mythology Exposed are excellent resources for creating a culture of learning at your school. I...
